Using a scented body wash can be a little tricky for sensitive skin, but there are a few tips you can follow to minimise the risk of irritation.

  1. Choose hypoallergenic and dermatologist-tested products.
  2. Always patch test before using a body wash all over.
  3. Choose mild-scented body washes, formulated with natural ingredients compared to synthetic fragrances.
  4. If you experience irritation, it’s better to switch to fragrance-free body washes.

What ingredients should I look for in a body wash?

When choosing a body cleanser, you should keep in mind your skin type and the conditions you want to target.

  • The most important part of a body wash is the cleansing agent or surfactant. The most common one is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate-SLS. But, this ingredient has shown to be very drying for the skin, so it’s better if you avoid it, especially if you have sensitive and dry skin. Some gentler surfactants you can look for are sodium lauroyl isethionate, sodium isethionate, cocamidopropyl betaine etc.
  • If you have dry skin you will want a body wash full of hydrating and moisturising ingredients as well as nourishing oils. Look for agents such as glycerin, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, coconut oil, olive oil etc.
  • If you want to have a little exfoliation action, especially for those who suffer from body acne, you need a body wash with AHAs (such as lactic or glycolic acid), salicylic acid and/or benzoyl peroxide.
  • And if your only condition is that your body wash leaves your skin smelling great, then choose one with oils and plant extracts that you prefer, like Australian eucalyptus, Mediterranean rosemary, orange blossom, California lavender etc.
