Tanologist Extra Dark 1 Hour Express Tan Review

By Tara | Updated: 17/04/2023

This is a review of the Extra Dark 1 Hour Express Tan from Tanologist.

As someone who has used nearly every brand of tanner, I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to fake tan. With that said, I am always on the hunt for new fake tanning brands to deliver a faux glow.

Before finding the product at Priceline, I had never heard of the brand before. After some digging, I found that Tanologist is founded by UK makeup artist Lottie Tomlinson. The brand looks to be trying to gain more market share in the competitive Australian fake tan market.

I have been pleasantly surprised with the Tanologist Extra Dark tanning mousse. Having consistently used the tan throughout the summer, I haven’t missed any of my go-to self-tanning products.

In this review, I will provide my experience using this tanner and whether I would consider purchasing again.

Keep reading to see if this the right fake tan for you.

Tanologist 1-Hour Express Tan Extra Dark Review

Look & Feel

As described, this product has a mousse/foam consistency. On the application, you will find it has a tinted colour guide. I personally prefer tanning products that are not transparent/clear as it can often make application tricky.

Fragrance

The fragrance can make or break a good fake tan. If you have ever encountered a bad-smelling tan, it can put you off the product altogether. In terms of fragrance, the express tan is a standout.

It’s one of the best-smelling tanners I have used. The signature Eucalyptus scent makes it pleasant to wear.

Application

I used a glove to apply the product. It was an easy-breezy application and spread evenly.

I have found some tanning products to be hard to spread and catch onto dry patches of your skin. This was easily spread across my whole body which made for a quick application time.

Dry time

Another thing to love about the product was how quickly it dried. There was no lingering stickiness and didn’t end up transferred to my clothing.

Wash-off

One of my biggest frustrations with 1-hour tanners in the past has been seeing it all go down the drain when it’s time to wash off. That was not the case with Tanologist’s Self Tan Mousse.

While the top layer did wash off, it was apparent that the tanner has absorbed perfectly into my skin, leaving a deep, natural-looking tan — I will explain more about the final result below.

Final Colour

Post-wash, you are left with a beautiful, deep, and dark tan. As someone who is naturally pale, I have to be conscious when applying super dark tanners that it doesn’t end up looking… abnormal.

This left a very natural-looking and summer kissed tan. Overall, I have been really happy with the final shade.

That being said, I wouldn’t recommend this tan for going into the office or if you were in a colder climate. I have been able to pull it off in an Australian summer where it’s not out of place to wear a deep, dark tan.

Longevity

The tan lasts me approximately 5 days with consistent moisturising each day. After around the 5-day mark, it starts to fade and becomes a little patchy. 5 days is actually a great outcome for a tanning product — it’s not uncommon for them to start fading in 3 days.

Would I purchase this again?

Absolutely. Overall, it’s everything you would want in a tanning product. I think the more people that discover Tanologist will find it becomes their go-to tanner.

Tanologist offers several other products like their Self-Tan Water and Gradual Tanners. Personally, I prefer the instant gratification of the 1-Hour Express Tan but would be open to reviewing their product range.
